This month I edited two photos that I had earlier taken and made one render. The first photo was created during the "solar eclipse". Before it happened I took a picture of the field with mountains in the background. When the eclipse happened I had a long focal length lens which I used to capture the covering. I then composited this photo into the earlier one and added stars from another photo that I had taken. The second photo was taken when I was taking photos at a skatepark. When I took the photo I had a manual focus lens and the photo was blurry. I made this not noticeable by making the photo noisy. This made it look like it was taken on film. The third photo was made using a process I talked about in the April Portfolio Review. Basically I made random patterns and then applied effects and changed the color multiple times until I got the final result.

This month I created created 3 digital designs and one photo. The for the photo I wanted to make make the text stand out. I used different types of blur to achieve this. I also used different layers to make a rim light around my head (can see mostly around neck). The second picture was first created in multiple stages. I first took a bunch of random photos online and mashed, colored, destroyed, and distorted them. I repeated this multiple times to get it to the way it looks. I then put this photo on to one of the original Apple Macs & took a photo of it. The third was a re-edit of a earlier design I had made. I took a picture of fireworks about 3 years ago and distorted & "liquified" it. I then changed the color and added a "A". The last design was made similarly to the 2nd one. I made random patterns and then repeatedly applied effects to get this design. I think it would be a neat logo.
This month I created 3 digital renders and took one portrait for my AP Portfolio. The three renders some of my favorites out of all my "Breath" for AP. They all were completely different styles and made use of different techniques. This first picture was created by using a technique in 2d and 3d environments where it subtracts one object from another. I created a ball and added displacement and subtracted that from a cube. After rendering that I brought it into Photoshop and applied a gradient map to make it
For For the first two images "displacement" was a large factor. Displacement can be applied to any 3D object and creates texture. It pushes the whites up and blacks down which creates a texture. In the first image the "cut away" from the cube was created by a sphere with a inverted displacement. After doing this I used a "Boole" to cut away the displaced sphere from the cube. I exported this to Photoshop and used the "find edges" effect to get the cartoonish line look. I copied one part of the image and gave it a outline and drop shadow. I added a dot pattern that gave this second image more interest. I used a gradient map to take all the colors and make them black or yellow. The third image was created in Sketch and Photoshop. I found a image of a astronaut online and recreated his form. I used multiple circles and differed their paths and opacities to make something that looked like a portal.
Over the month of January it snowed. This made for some unique photo opportunities. This first image is looking down over a crack on a frozen lake. After increasing the sharpness and curves I used a Gradient Map to make the image have a blue tint. The second image was taken with a timer. After taking the photo and turning it black & white I added more snow falling. I created a noise and then used curves to remove 99% of the dots. I was then left with a few white dots and I applied a motion blur to make them appear as if they were falling. The third Image was created with pictures of fireworks. I used the Liquidify tool to distort the image. I then changed the hue to make it blue. I also used curves to bring the shadows up to give it more fill. The last image I made by taking the distorted fireworks and using displacement to to make it 3D. After rendering I added a lens flare to make look as if there was a really strong backlight.
I have been simultaneously working on three different projects this month. The first two are computer generated ones that are not completely finished but are getting close. These take a while to make because the lighting is very hard to get just right. They also take time because every time you make a change you have render to see how it actually looks. The last one is a concept. The image show above was for another piece of client work, however I liked the style so I am going to take another picture and trace over it similar to the 3rd image. This month I will also be making another cover that is based around the fourth photo. It will be a abstract picture of a plant with a gradient background. This will be fun to experiment with by using different lighting setups.
I worked on editing the three concentration pieces I have so far. I spent the majority of the time working on Reagan’s (3). I used a portrait of her and a picture of clouds I had previously taken. In the original pictures there was only 1 or 2 clouds but I was able to combine them to make it seem as if there were more. After removing the background from here I was able to feather the hair and body to make it blend with the background more. At first the clouds had no pink/orange. I wanted to add more pop so I tried adding a solid and changing the blending mode. I used different curves to add more contrast.
I also completed A emotional brainstorming exercise in my workbook. Making a web of emotions and connecting them led to a new ideas that I would not normally come up with. Branching out I found that many of them connected from different areas and branches. From working on making a web it helped me relate emotions to objects. I also created a poster for the upcoming “Concert under the Stars”. I used a picture I had previously composited of the night sky. |
AuthorI have been interested in computers, design, and photography from a very young age. In addition to studying art in school, I work part-time in graphic design at Digital Scientists. |
