When I was taking these photos I wanted them to all be clear. I used a high f-stop to make everything in focus. For the Atlanta photo with the cars I used a long shutter to make the lights from the cars streak. I wanted the left and right side of the road to have a similar amount of cars. I had to wait for the light to change so I could take the photo. I centered the tripod in the middle of the light post so it would seam symmetrical. When I was editing I made it black and white and it looked much better. For the picture of the water I used a fast shutter speed to make the water freeze. For the picture of the building I separated the sky and the building in Photoshop. I applied a motion blur to the sky to make it look like a long exposure. The picture of the mountain I made the trees darker to look like a silhouette. I repositioned the camera multiple times to get just the right amount of ups and downs of the mountains in frame. I adjusted the color of the blue to make it look more purple which made it look like a better sunset. For the other city photo I used a color gradient to map the colors. It takes the gradient and applies one color to the brightest part of the photo and vise versa. I learned for this project that color is very important and landscape photos.

For this project we took photos with the black screen and softboxes. I wanted the photos to have dramatic lighting. I made sure there was not that much headroom. On a few of the photos I positioned a balloon very close to the lense to make a “lense flare” effect. In Photoshop I adjusted the whites and blacks to make the black screen a little darker. When taking the photos we had to make the tripod the same height as the person. We used a large piece of paper to bounce the light underneath the face. We also used the white wall to bounce the light. I did that because the amount of light produced by a softbox was too much but the bounced light was perfect. We did the same with the ceiling. For some of the photos we positioned one softbox directly to the right of the subject and one to the left. We tested with the different light settings on the lights. In Photoshop I increased the the sharpness to add definition to the face. We tested with different angles of the face and different zooms to get the right framing. We also tried making a rim light by positioning the light behind and slightly to the right of the subject. On some of the photos in Photoshop I made it have much more contrast by using the curves.
For the self portrait project I learned that light plays a major role. If the light is in the wrong spot it will create shadows on the nose and chin that are undesirable. I also learned that the photo needs to be very sharp and focused. The facial expression is also very important. I played with different lights and times of days to get the right lighting and fill lighting. For the photo with scribbles in the background I took the photo and removed the background using the selection brush. I created a solid and drew lines that fit each other. I then lowered the occupancy to make them not stand out as much. For the close up photo I used the softboxes in class and put one near my face. I turned my face to so it looked more natural. In photoshop I made the darker parts more dark and increased sharpening.
When I was taking these photos I took some indoors and some outside. I also showed some will natural lighting and without. I used some photos using artificial light and some using pure sunlight. For one of the photos I used reflected natural light to brighten up the subject. I would have liked to use a tripod so I could have used a longer exposure and smaller ISO. I have never used reflected light before but it really makes a large difference if you are facing a window or have a lot of shadows.
When I was taking these photos I looked for complex shapes. I made them all black and white so the curves and edges would be more visible. I also Increased the contrast and clarity to give more definition to the edges.
I took these photos around golden hour. For most of the photos I was facing the sun to get the best lighting. When I edited them I adjusted the colors to be more golden. I used my 55-200mm lens to get very blurry backgrounds and foregrounds. On the first photo I knew I wanted to have leaves in front that were blurred. The same blurred foreground can also be seen in the third photo. For the picture of the flower (fourth photo) I made only the top of the plant in focus. For the picture of the leaf (third photo) I wanted the leaf to have more contrast so I put it facing the sun to enhance the lines. When editing these photos I dragged a few of the hue sliders to the left which gave the photos more accurate coloring. Because I was shooting Raw I was able to bring up the exposure a lot and shoot at a higher shutter speed. I used curves to brighten some of the areas that were dark. The blurred backgrounds made these photos a lot better than some of my previous photos. I will use my longer lens a lot more now because of the depth of field that it gives me. I added grain to some of these photos to add some more texture.
When taking these photos I wanted to have a lot of contrast. These photos have a bright and dark areas. This project was all about lighting and how darks contrasted with brights. Some of these photos come across as being "sad" or "alone" because of the amount of darkness. Editing these photos I boosted the contrast, made them black and white, and adjusted the blacks and whites. With the picture of the lighter I removed the label saying BIC. If I were to take these photos again I would like to made them brighter so that while editing I would not get as much grain and distortion. I would have also liked to use a sunset to get some silhouettes that would really display value. I would also try using color. When uploading these photos I put them through tinypng.com so it would not take long to load this page.
For this project I wanted to find small details that have repetition and texture. I angled my camera so it would show the displacement in the objects. a few of these photos repetition is also shown. I used my phones flashlight to show more shadows from the texture. (Extra Reading: For 3D digital design there is bump and displacement. they both create texture but bump does not physically come out. Bump fakes displacement and requires much less computer power. )
For this project I found cool geometric shapes and structures. Much of these photos also display texture. I would see lines that lead the eye through the photo. The lines will also sometimes lead to a single point. One photo below also shows perpendicular lines. Some lines are implied but do not physically exist. Making these photos black and white enhanced the lines. When looking for pictures to take I would usually look for multiple lines and not just one.
